Silverdome buyer plans multi-sport use

Pontiac, Mich. — The owner of the Canadian company that's buying the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan says he wants to bring football, baseball and other sports to the 80,300-seat venue.

Triple Properties Inc. of Toronto said earlier it wanted to use the former home of the Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons for soccer.

Company chief executive Andreas Apostolopoulos told the Detroit Free Press he likes being involved in all kinds of sports.

He says he was interested in the Silverdome and its surrounding site from the moment he heard of it.

The Silverdome was built in 1975 for $56 million (U.S.) and was sold at auction for $583,000 — the equivalent of about $7.25 a seat.

The Lions moved to Detroit's Ford Field in 2002.
